Well, it certainly has been a while since we’ve updated the site and you guys on what’s been going on.
Here’s the rundown:
Mel and Tom were working feverishly on their projects, Realm of REM and Division. So hard in fact, that they nearly lost their minds. The demands of so many projects and personal commitments were taking their toll on those poor humans, and left them with very little health and sanity to cling onto. So, before they both became mush, they decided to hit pause, refocus and recover.
What does this mean?
Division Issue 2 was cranking along. The book was drawn to completion and final rendering of the line art was in progress. Tom was doing it all on his own for this issue, with an awesome cover painting by Mel. After about half the book was finished in line art, Tom’s health had hit bottom and he couldn’t continue to produce the book at the quality it, and it’s fans deserved. Other projects and personal life commitments had piled up to a dangerous level. He had to take a knee and recalculate his resources and make a new plan.
The Realm of REM had been going through a series of really exciting draft enhancements and art creation. The story and look of the world were evolving beautifully and full of passion and emotion. Eventually though, the constant influx of additional projects that were flowing into Tommel Design, had become too unwieldy for book production to continue at it’s current pace, and Mel decided to hit pause and regroup with a new plan and a new initiative to repair her mind and body, which had taken a beating from the insane pace at which she was working. Something to the effect of nearly 75hr/weeks on average, fueled by a steady stream of caffeine and poor dietary decisions. Needless to say, years were shaved off of their lives and they decided enough was enough.
Fast forward 1 year of health repair and soul-searching. The team has changed it’s lifestyle considerably. Dietary, behavioral, mental and creative identities have all shifted, grown and improved TREMENDOUSLY. The team is currently working on-site jobs at different clients during the day, and slowly planning and plotting their new creative endeavors in the background at night.
In regard to Division, Tom has begun revisiting his artwork and planning a new execution method/style and schedule that will be much more visually rich and less physically punishing. Mel has paused The Realm of REM as she continues to pursue studies in areas previously untouched by her interests, primarily outside of the visual arts and more involved with nature and health. She will resume her artistic endeavors as the dust continues to settle in the remaining areas of her life. REM is still alive and full of wonder, but it is currently in it’s chrysalis phase as it is being re-worked and streamlined into it’s best form. There is no set timeline for production on this project yet, but we will update you on that when more information becomes available in the coming months.
A new and improved, more effective, faster, advanced and experienced Tom and Mel, with a new look and feel coming your way. More project related artwork is coming in the future, but if you want to keep up on what we’re currently doing, you might want to check out our Behance portfolios which are updated more often and if you’re so inclined, you can see regularly posted/updated artwork from Tom on his instagram account @kungfusalsa.
Thanks for keeping the love and energy alive! We can’t wait to show you more of what we love 🙂
